AcupunctureNeuroanatomical acupunctureWhat is acupuncture? Acupuncture is a therapeutic method used to encourage natural healing, reduce or relieve pain and improve function of affected areas of the body. Acupuncture is safe and effective and is often successfully used as an alternative to medications. Relief is sometimes obtained when traditional medical therapy has failed. Acupuncture involves the insertion of very fine needles through the skin and tissues at specific points on the body. There is no injection of any substance and the treatment itself causes minimal discomfort. “Classical” acupuncture was developed in China as a system of diagnosing and treating pain and disease. “Anatomical” acupuncture refers to a modern approach taken by many western trained acupuncture therapists. When combined with a knowledge of anatomy, physiology and pathophysiology modern therapists can use acupuncture effectively. Modern technology has allowed variations in acupuncture treatment. Electro-acupuncture involves stimulation of inserted needles with gentle electrical impulses. How does acupuncture work? Acupuncture stimulates the body to produce its own pain relieving chemicals called “endorphins”. These chemicals mimic morphine by attaching to opiate receptor sites found throughout the nervous system. Endorphins help to block pathways that relay pain messages from the body to the brain, resulting in relief of pain, general relaxation and biochemical restoration of the body’s own internal regulation systems. Are there any adverse effects or risks to the treatment? One of the most striking aspects of acupuncture is the almost complete absence of adverse effects and complications from its use. Most patients find that the treatments are relaxing and cause minimal discomfort. Acupuncture Canada recommends that only sterile disposable needles be used, preventing any risk of infection. How many treatments will be required? The number of treatments will vary with each individual and the condition being treated. For acute problems, only a few treatments may be required. For complex and chronic conditions, one or two treatments a week for several weeks may be recommended with less frequent treatment as improvement occurs. Relief may be immediate or occur within a few hours, or after a few days. In some conditions, several sessions may be required before improvement is noticed. Acupuncture can be an individual treatment or used in combination with manual therapy. Dry needlingDry needling is a technique used by physiotherapists in order to treat muscular pain and myofascial dysfunction. Dry needling is performed using the same needles used for anatomical acupuncture but needles are inserted into trigger points. This technique uses needles to target specific muscles that can be contracted and shortened. These tight muscles can compress joints and nerves and cause pain or limited range of motion. Releasing trigger points by using dry needling can greatly reduce the tightness and pain and also increase flexibility and range of motion. Common minor complications that usually resolve on their own include bleeding, bruising, and pain during or after treatment.
Shockwave TreatmentShockwave is an acoustic wave which carries high energy to painful spots and myoskeletal tissues with subacute, subchronic and chronic conditions. The energy promotes regeneration and reparative processes of the bones, tendons and other soft tissues. Acoustic waves with high energy peak used in Shockwave therapy interact with tissue causing overall medical effects of accelerated tissue repair and cell growth, analgesia and mobility restoration. Conditions commonly treated by Shockwave include:
Complete Concussion ManagementCertified with Compete Concussion Management https://completeconcussions.com/ At Advantage Physiotherapy, we are trained healthcare practitioners at recognizing and treating acute and post concussion syndrome (PCS). Concussions will never be fully preventable, so recognizing and providing appropriate care for concussive injuries is crucial. Acute ConcussionsImmediately following a concussion, its imperative to start treatment right away to reduce the risk of PCS. Treatment follows the updated Return to learn/work protocols along with evidence-based education. Being a part of the Complete Concussion Management team provides us with access to valuable up-to-date resources and evidence to provide the best care possible. Post Concussion SyndromeAlthough PCS is classified as signs/symptoms >3 months, we begin to treat the concussion as chronic as early as 14 days post injury. The majority of the population is misinformed on proper concussion protocol by either resting significantly longer then needed or returning to work/sports immediately following a concussion. Initiating treatment early helps resolve symptoms sooner. If diagnosed with PCS, we try to assess and treat the area responsible (vestibular, cervical, metabolic, visual) through exercise, manual therapy, and education. Baseline TestingPrior to every season, it’s important to have every athlete/team run through baseline testing so we have objective measures to identify if a player is ready to return to play following a concussion. Baseline testing provides us with valuable information that may support safer return to play decisions because symptoms alone are a poor indicator of recovery.
